Volleyball Defeats George Washington on the Road, 3-2

WASHINGTON, DC - The Rhode Island volleyball team (11-11 overall; 3-5 Atlantic 10) collected its second straight conference victory on the road as it downed George Washington, 3-2.

With the win over the Colonials, the Rams have now won two of their last three five-game matches. URI also improved to 6-4 in road matches this season.

Four URI players reached double figures in kills. Junior Caitlyn Welsh (Narragansett, R.I.) led the way with a match-high 16 kills. Welsh also tallied 21 digs to record her 13th double-double on the year.

Sophomores Kayla Newberg (Deer Park, Wash.) and Lauren McIntosh (Colorado Springs, Colo.) also chipped in with 11 kills apiece, while sophomore Lindsay Lytle (Sebastopol, Calif.) tallied 10 terminations.

Defensively, senior Peggy Doino (Deer Park, N.Y.) led the way with a match-high 22 digs.

The Rams opened the match with a 25-20 victory in the first set and held the Colonials to an attack percentage of .059.

George Washington responded with a 25-21 triumph to even the match at 1-1. URI would then take a 2-1 lead after it downed GW 25-21.

The Colonials would then force a fifth game as they defeated the Rams 25-20. In the fifth game, URI posted an attack percentage of .429 en route to a 15-10 victory.

Rhode Island returns to action on Saturday as it welcomes to Xavier. The match is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
