Oct. 16, 2009

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Rhode Island volleyball team (6-12; 1-6 Atlantic 10) picked up its first conference victory of the season Friday night as it defeated La Salle 3-1 on the road.

Rhody's victory over the Explorers put an end to its seven-game losing streak.

Juniors Lauren McIntosh and Kayla Newberg led the Rams offensively as they recorded 11 kills apiece. Sophomore Candice Kolkka chipped in with 41 assists. Junior Kalyn Klaess paced the squad defensively with 22 digs.

In the first set, both teams traded points and were tied at seven points apiece. Rhody would then go on to win five of the next six points to take a 12-8 lead that it would not relinquish. URI went on to win opening frame 25-16.

URI won the second set 25-21 and limited the Explorers to an attack percentage of just .024. Rhody won seven of the last 10 points in the frame to take a 2-0 match advantage.

La Salle responded in the third set with a 25-17 victory to cut Rhody's match lead in half at 2-1.

In fourth set, URI took an early 11-5 lead and appeared to have things well in hand, but the Explorers fought back to close Rhody's lead to one (13-12). The Rams responded by winning 12 of the last 15 points to claim the match 3-1.

Rhody returns to action tomorrow afternoon as it takes on Temple beginning at 4 p.m.
