Setting the Scene
The Rhode Island volleyball team closed out competition at the Stony Brook Holiday Inn Express Tournament with a pair of 3-2 wins over Kent State and Stony Brook. Overall, the Rams went 3-0 at the tournament as they also defeated Iona, 3-1, on Friday night.
How It Happened
The Rams won the first match of the day against Kent State in five sets (3-2). Rhody trailed the Flashes, 2-1, but rallied back to win the final two sets, 25-18 and 15-9, and pick up the victory. In the late match against tournament host Stony Brook, URI jumped out to a 2-0 lead after posting a pair of 25-23 wins. However, the Seawolves came back and evened it up at 2-2 before URI posted a 15-6 win to capture the match as well as the tournament title.
Baarstad recorded a match-high 20 kills and Wilson added 18 in the win over Kent State. Katherine Kolodziej led all players with 15 digs. Baarstad and Wilson then led the teams with 17 kills against Stony Brook while Nelson posted a team-best 31 assists.
What it Means
With the wins, the Rams move to 5-1 on the season. Over 26 sets so far this season, Rhody is averaging 14.4 digs, 12.1 kills, 11.4 assists and 1.1 blocks.
Stat of the Day
With 17 kills and 10 digs, Wilson recorded her team-leading fourth double-double of the season against Stony Brook. Wilson has also double-doubled against Eastern Kentucky (19k/12d), Pitt (12k/15d) and Iona (20k/19d).
The Rams return to action next weekend (Sept. 9-10) when they host the Art Carmichael Invitational. URI is set to face Columbia (11 a.m.) and Wisconsin (7 p.m.) on Friday before taking on Boston College (7 p.m.) on Saturday.
