How It Happened:
Rhode Island used a strong hitting day - .302 (62k, 20e, 139a) to get past Iona in four sets in the opening round game of the Stony Brook/Holiday Inn Express Tournament. Kayla Wilson led the way with 20 kills and 19 digs, while Annie Nelson had 46 assists.
What It Means:
The Rams improve to 3-1 overall on the season - including a 2-0 mark in true neutral matches. Rhody used a strong defensive effort - 63 digs and a season-high seven blocks - to get by the Gaels.
Inside the Box Score and Beyond:
* Kayla Wilson posted her third straight double-double in kills and digs. Her .341 hitting percentage (20k, 5e, 44a) was her highest of the season.
* The Rams hit over .400 in each of the last two sets. In the third, URI hit .417, while closing out the fourth and final set with a .429 mark.
* Catie Steffen led the team with two solo blocks.
Tomorrow, the Rams continue play in the Stony Brook/Holiday Inn Express Tournament. Rhode Island takes on Kent State at 10 a.m., followed by a 5:30 p.m. tilt against host Stony Brook.
