Setting the Scene
The Rhode Island women's volleyball team opened its 2011 season on Friday afternoon at the A.J. Palumbo Center in Pittsburgh, Pa.
How It Happened
Rhody captured the first set 25-13. In the second frame the Rams opened up a six point advantage in the second set, leading 18-12, but Saint Francis fought back and trailed by just one point at 24-23. URI would go on to win the frame 25-23 thanks to a kill by senior Kayla Wilson and take a 2-0 lead. URI closed out the Red Flash in the third set as it won 12 of the final 17 points to claim a 25-13 victory.
Stars of the Match
Senior Kayla Wilson tallied a match-high 11 kills and junior setter Annie Nelson dished out a match-high 25 assists. Also chipping in for the Rams was sophomore Jill Anderson and senior Lindsay Potts as they both total six kills apiece. Freshman Katherine Kolodziej led the Rams defensively as she posted 11 digs in her first collegiate match.
What It Means
With the win, the Rams won their third straight season-opener.
Stats of the day
As a team, Rhody outhit the Red Flash .346-.094 and held a 40-32 dig advantage.
URI returns to action on Saturday, beginning at 3 p.m. as it takes on Eastern Kentucky in the Pitt Panther Invitational.
