KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island senior Marie Gillcrist has been named Atlantic 10 Co-Defensive Player of the Week, following her performance at the Holly Young Invitational this past weekend.
A middle blocker, Gillcrist helped lead Rhode Island to a pair of wins at the tournament, recording 19 blocks over 13 sets (1.46 b/s). She also averaged 1.38 kills per set (18 total) and finished the weekend with four service aces.
Against Dartmouth on Friday, the Lakewood, Colo. native set a new career-high with 12 block assists. The total tied her for the third-most in a single match in program history and is the most by any Rhode Island player since 1996.
With 63 total blocks so far this season, Gillcrist is on pace to record her second-career 100+ block season.
The Rams return to action this weekend when they travel south to open Atlantic 10 play. Rhody will face VCU on Friday night and Davidson on Sunday afternoon.
