KINGSTON, R.I. - The University of Rhode Island women's track and field team notched a second-place finish in one of the most exciting Atlantic 10 Championships in recent memory at the Mackal Field House on Saturday afternoon.

Rhode Island and Richmond headed into the final event, the 4x800 relay, tied at 129.50. In the 4x800 relay, Richmond notched a fourth-place finish while the Rams placed sixth, giving the Spiders a total of 134.50 points and the school's first-ever track and field championship.

Freshman Emily Anderson (Westerly, N.Y.) was second in the 1,000 meter run while junior Heidi Westerling (Charlestown, N.H.) finished third in the 3,000 meters (10:19.07) and the 5,000 meters (17:31.93). Fellow junior Colleen Jones (Rye, N.Y.) placed fifth in the 800 meters (2:18.69)

The Rams once again had a strong showing in the field events. Rhode Island had three of the top-five finishers in the pole vault with senior Katie Waters taking second with a height of 10'11.75". Freshman Caitlyn Densing (Blue Point, N.Y.) was fourth at 10'6.00" while Holly Stettner (Flemington, N.J.) was fifth with a height of 10'0.00".
