Tennis Wraps Up Fall Schedule With Win at Hofstra

Rhody Tennis Competes at ITA Regionals

Rams Ease Past Fordham, 7-0

May 1, 2007

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - It was announced today, by the Atlantic 10 Conference, that Rhode Island senior Lara Maurer (Bay Village, Ohio) has been named to the A-10 women's tennis first team while freshman Nyssa Peele (Austin, Texas) earned second-team recognition and sophomore Grace Hedstrom (Minnetonka, Minn.) landed a spot on the All-Academic squad.

Maurer, a senior transfer student from the University of Kentucky, stepped in and made an immediate impact on the Rhode Island women's tennis program. Playing at the No. 1 spot in both singles and doubles this year, she combined for a 38-10 record after going 23-4 in singles and pairing with sophomore Valerie Chacon (Spring, Texas) and Hedstrom for a 15-6 doubles record. Maurer opened the fall season with 14-consecutive singles wins before dropping a match to the No. 6 seed at the ITA Eastern Regionals. Aside from being undefeated in fall dual matches, Maurer was the silver medalist (at No. 1) at the ECAC Championship, finished first in Flight One singles and doubles at the New England Championships and won the singles title at Dartmouth's Big Green Invitational before teaming with Chacon to finish second in the doubles draw at the same event. At this spring's Atlantic 10 Championship, Maurer was 2-1 in singles and 1-0 in doubles.

In her first year of collegiate competition, Peele was one of just two Atlantic 10 freshmen to earn All-Conference recognition. Playing at No. 3 and 4 singles throughout the fall, the Rhody rookie turned in a perfect 15-0 mark including winning the flight four gold medal at the ECAC Championship and finishing first at No. 4 singles and No. 2 doubles at the New England Championship. In all, Peele was 20-4 in singles (No. 3 and 4) this year and was 16-8 at No. 2 doubles for a combined record of 36-12.

Hedrstrom, one of just six Atlantic 10 women's tennis players named to the All-Academic team, boasts a perfect 4.00 GPA as a Psychology major. In fact, of the 35 women's tennis players on the A-10 Academic All-Conference ballot, Hedstrom was the only student-athlete with a 4.00 cumulative grade point average. This year, she compiled a 19-9 singles record, playing at No. 3 and No. 4, and was 18-6 in doubles, playing at No. 2 in the fall before moving up to No. 1 in the spring. Hedstrom helped lead URI to an undefeated (7-0) fall season and first-place finishes at both the ECAC and New England Championships. She was the top-finisher at No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles at the New England's and finished second at No. 3 singles at the ECAC's.

The URI women's tennis team finished the season with a 14-6 record in dual matches and tied Saint Louis for seventh place at the 2007 Atlantic 10 Championship.
