Oct. 26, 2008
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Rhode Island women's tennis team competed at the Brown Invitational this past weekend. The Rams - who were led by freshmen twins Kirsten Leikem and Tristany Leikem's first-place finish at No. 1 doubles - finished with an overall record of 19-15. "This is a highly competitive tournament with some very strong teams," head coach Sandy Wood said of the five-team field which also included squads from Army, Brown, Stony Brook and Syracuse. "Last year we were able to win about 20% of our matches. This year we showed our sterength by posting a record above .500 as we went 13-11 in singles and 6-4 in doubles. All eight players of our had some fine matches and played some outstanding tennis. The highligt of course was the Leikem twins winning the top flight in doubles over excellent teams from Syracuse, Brown and Army. At the end we were tired, but satisfied about proving we belonged." The Rams have now wrapped up their fall schedule and will return to action in the spring.
