Rams Defeated By West Virginia, 5-2
March 11, 2008
EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Rhode Island women's tennis team lost a 5-2 match to West Virginia, Sunday afternoon at Centre Court in East Providence, R.I. The loss drops the Rams to 7-3 on the season.
West Virginia got things started by claiming the doubles point with wins at No. 1 thru No. 3.
"While we were overpowered in doubles, we came back to put up a good battle in singles," noted head coach Sandy Wood. "Christen Cadigan dictated play with powerful crosscourt groundstrokes to defeat her defensively oriented opponent in a third set tiebreaker while Amanda Barletta also won the crucial third set tiebreaker which is a nice turn around after dropping two of them the previous weekend. Kristen Liu also played well for us, losing a good battle at #6."
URI's lone victories of the match came from Cadigan at No. 3 (6-4, 6-7, 10-1) and Barletta at No. 5 (2-6, 7-6, 10-8). The Rams were handed straight set losses at the other singles positions.
Rhody returns to action on Monday, March 17 when it faces Flagler in Daytona, Fla.
