Women's Tennis Drops Matches to Brown and Bucknell
March 2, 2008
Dear Rhody Tennis Fans, Its Coach Wood again, here to tell you about our weekend... Well, we gained some valuable experience today (the hard way) as we played a doubleheader with two strong and quality veteran teams. Both Brown and Bucknell have been battle tested, playing seven matches each in January and February. For us, this was essentially our spring season opener. And while these two teams are in mid-season form right now, our goal is to round into shape and peak in April. Anyhow, we were able to keep them out on the court for over four hours in each match but at the end, had nothing to show for it as we dropped two 7-0 contests. The girls played quite well as the matches were highly competitive. We split sets and were able to force third set tiebreakers in four separate matches but were unable to capitalize, ending up on the short end of all the tiebreakers. The good news is that playing tough matches like this will toughen us up for the rest of our challenging spring season! Some of the highlights were turned in by the team of sophomores Amanda Barletta and Steff Catanzano who comfortably won at 3rd doubles against Bucknell with steady powerful returns and strong attacking volleys. It was the best match of Stefani's URI career to date. Junior Grace Hedstrom played two outstanding sets at #2 against Bucknell controlling the match with her powerful forehand while freshman Christen Cadigan came back against a talented player at #3 with penetrating drives off both sides to level her match at a set apiece before succumbing in a tiebreaker. Amanda probably had the most frustrating day as she dropped opening sets in both her matches but turned it around to dominate the second two sets with excellent play before dropping third set tiebreakers. In addition, the trend by everyone across the board was to play a much better and more competitive second set in all matches which bodes well for the future. All in all, it was a tough day today but one that will pay dividends down the road. The URI Women's Tennis record drops to 7-2 with another tough match coming up Sunday March 8th when we square off with the BROWN 7, Singles 1. Sara Mansur (BROWN) def. Nyssa Peele; 6-1, 6-4 2.
