How It Happened
Rhode Island battled tough in singles play, but came up with just one victory against Harvard on the first day of the Harvard Fall Scramble Friday afternoon.
Playing at the Beren Tennis Center in Allston, Mass., the Rams were swept in doubles play. Sophomore Mihaela Codreanu got a point back for Rhode Island at No. 1 singles by beating Harvard's Irene Lu in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1. The victory improved Codreanu's season record to 6-1, including a perfect 3-0 in dual meets.
Freshman Halah Davis got off to a fast start, taking the first set in her match against Harvard's Anna Li by a 6-1 score. Li evened the match by winning the second set, 6-4. Li then got the win with a 10-3 superset tiebreaker.
"I was extremely pleased with our effort in singles today," head coach Tim Murphy said. "I believe it was one of the first times we played Harvard close in the program's history. I am hoping for the same energy tomorrow against Middlebury."
