KINGSTON, R.I. - The Rhode Island men's swimming & diving team defeated Maine 171.5-122.5 and the Rhode Island women's swimming & diving team was edged 149-148 on Sunday at the Tootell Aquatic Center.

Senior Colleen Roche (Mauriceville, N.J.) won two events, but the Rhode Island women's team lost to Maine 149-148.

Roche won both diving events, taking the 1-meter dive with a score of 186.75 and winning the 3-meter dive with a score of 178.43.

Senior Shannon Lelek (Fairport, N.Y.) won the 100 butterfly (1:00.10) and finished second in the 200 butterfly (2:17.70), behind sophomore Jodi Tveitmoe (Westminister, Colo.), who won the even in 2:10.22.

Senior Kate Hawley (Centerville, Mass.) took first in the 500 freestyle in 5:23.28 and sophomore Ginny Sorrell (Indianapolis, Ind.) placed first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:10.04.

Rhode Island's 200 freestyle relay team of freshman Elaina Duggan (Portsmouth, R.I.), junior Kate Grise (Chicopee, Mass.), senior Jessica Scherer (Montgomery Village, Mary.) and sophomore Kari Leonard (Pownal, Maine) took first in 1:41.90.

For the men, sophomore Ben Robinson (Sinking Spring, Pa.) won three events to lead the Rams. Robinson took first in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9 minutes, 57.94 seconds, won the 200 breaststroke (2:17.69) and placed first in the 400 individual medley (4:21.80).

Freshman Greg LaValle (Rumford, R.I.) won the 100 backstroke in 58.70 seconds and junior Matt Emmert (Clearmont, Fla.) won the 500 freestyle in 5:05.74. Sophomore Craig Keenan (Gwynedd Valley, Pa.) won the 200 butterfly in 2:05.84

 

 

Sophomore Matt Hartke (Verona, N.J.) placed first in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.93), freshman Chris Healy (Middletown, R.I.) took first in the 100 freestyle and fellow frosh Matt Sorice (Suffern, N.Y.) won the 200 backstroke in 2:08.26.

Rhode Island's 200 freestyle relay team of Healy, freshman Ross Mooney (Riverside, R.I.), Keenan and Emmert took first in 1:30.96.

The Rhode Island men's team improved to 2-0, while the women's team dropped to 0-2. The Rams travel to Brown for an exhibition meet on Saturday, before returning to regular-season action on Nov. 9 at Vermont.
