Feb. 27, 2003
Buffalo, N.Y,- - The women's swimming and diving teams had a record setting weekend on their way to a seventh place finish a the 2003 Atlantic Ten Swimming and Diving Chasmpionships in Buffalo, NY. Senior Shannon Lelek of Fairport, NY, paved the way with her 5th place finish in the 100 Butterfly going :57.67 in the prelims, breaking her own varsity record. She continued to pile on her PR's with a 2:09.08 and a seventh place finish in the 200 Butterfly. Sophomore Jodi Tveitmoe from Golden, CO, did two PR's (Personal Records) and set two varsity records. Her 2:09.26 in the 200 IM was good for seveth place, and her time was a lifetime best in that event. Her 4th place finish in the 400 IM with a time of 4:30.38 was both a PR and a new varsity record. Finally, her 2:08.00 earned her a fourth place in the 200 Butterfly and a new varsity record. Jodi also swam on the 800 Freestyle Relay team with senior Kate Hawley (Barnstable, MA) and sophomores Kari Leonard (Pownal, ME) and Caroline Rossueau (Nashua, NH). Their time of 7:47.40 broke the record that was nine years old. Kari Leonard had a great weekend also by finishing 5th in the 100 Backstroke and 7th in the 200 Backstroke. In the 100 she established a new varsity record by going :58.79 (also a PR), and she just missed breaking her own record in the 200 by going 2:07.55; the record remains at 2:07.35.
There were two other records set this past weekend by the women's team.
Kari Leonard, junior Katie Grise (Chicopee, MA), Elaina Duggan a freshman
from Portsmouth, RI, and senior Jessica Scherer from Montgomery Village, MD,
established a new record in the 200 Freestyle Relay. They finished seventh
at night, but went a record time of 1:37.96 in the pelims.
Kate Hawley joined Jessica, Katie Grise, and Kari Leonard to finish sixth again, this time in the 400 Freestyle Relay. Their time of 3:34.99 established, again, a new varsity record. It also propelled the team on the final event into the seventh spot in the team standings. Sophomores Lauren Kerivan and Caroline Rosseau clearly had outstanding weekends in Buffalo. Lauren's 4:37.51 in the 400 IM garnered her a 6th place. That finish along with Jodi's 4:30.38 (4th place) and Kate Hawley's 4:38.17 and 7th place was the first time in the history of our program that three swimmers were in finals together in the same event. Overall the team had more people in finals (top 8) than we have ever had. Nine swims were done in finals. Caroline finished 13th in the 500 Freestyle with a PR of 5:09.52 and in 11th place in the 1650 Free with another PR, 17:59.43. This put her an 11th place. Her third PR was in the 200 Free when she went 1:57.85. She had three individual swims and three PR's, and one relay swim when she helped establish a new PR. Katie Grise ('04) from Chicopee, MA, was on two record setting relays and was in the consolation finals (16th place) for the first time in her career. Others joining her in making it back into consolations for night swims were: Sneior captains Kate Hawley came back in the 500 Free and 1650 Freestyle and Jessica Scherer in the 100 Breaststroke. All three divers scored points for the team in the respective events: Senior Colleen Roche from Mauriceville, NJ was joined in the second eight of finals on one meter by Kate Rynn (Palmer, MA) and Katie Wilson (North Kingstown, RI). Colleen was 10th, Katie was 13th and Kate was 14th. On the 3 meter board Colleen finished in 11th place. The team had an outstanding weekend as observed by these numbers. Of the sixty five swims, counting only individual peformances and not relay times, 23 were PR's (personal best times) and 38 were seasonal best times. Three relay school records were estbalished and four additional individual records were set. |
