BUFFALO, N.Y. - The University of Massachusetts and Richmond remain on top after night two of the 2005 Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Championships. The Minutemen finished the night with a score of 274.5, while the Lady Spiders finished with 313 points.

The University of Rhode Island men's team is in seventh place with 19 points and the women's team is in eighth with 92 points.

In the women's 200 yard IM, Jodi Tveitmoe took home 10th place with a time of 2:10.26. Kari Leonard, Elaina Duggan, Cassie Mizia and Julie Kent took 8th place in the 200 yard Freestyle Relay in a time of 1:39.44.

The St. Bonaventure men finished in second place (224.5), La Salle in third (180), George Washington in fourth (145), followed by Fordham in fifth (135), Xavier in sixth (134), Rhode Island in seventh (19), and Duquesne in eighth (113).

In a hard-fought race to the end, UMass senior Justin Zeimetz came out on top of the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 20.92.

Sophomore Sean Flaherty of GW captured a gold medal in the 500-yard free with a time of 4:33.93, while Fordham rookie John Stoneburner placed first in the 200-yard individual medley event in 1:52.15.

The St. Bonaventure Bonnies finished the night on a high-note, earning their first gold medal of the competition. Senior Seth Johnson, and juniors Ryan Moore, Patrick Doret, and anchor Michal Bogacki finished the 200-yard free relay in 1:22.78.

On the boards, freshman RJ Rappe of UMass claimed a gold medal in the one-meter diving competition with a score of 304.30.

On the women's side, St. Bonaventure finished the night in second place (209), George Washington in third (179), the University of Massachusetts and Fordham ended the night tied for fourth (151), followed by Xavier in sixth (123), Duquesne in seventh (99), Rhode Island in eighth (92), and La Salle in ninth (65).

Richmond freshman Jessica Witt grabbed the first gold of the night with a first-place finish in 500-yard freestyle in a time of 4:57.34. Senior Mary Adams qualified for the A-10 b-cut in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:03.69. Junior teammate Brooke Boncher also qualified with a time of 23.12 in the 50-yard free.

 

 

In the 200-yard free relay, Adams and Boncher teamed with sophomores Michelle Coombs and Emily Bateman to win the gold medal in a time of 1:33.78.

Day three preliminaries begin at 10:30 a.m. with the finals starting at 6:30 p.m.
