BUFFALO, N.Y. - After night one of the 2005 Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Championships, the 2004 defending champions lead the competition. The University of Massachusetts men finished with a score of 80, while the Richmond women finished with 106 points.

St. Bonaventure finished in second place (68), Xavier in third (58), George Washington in fourth (56), followed by Fordham in fifth (54), Rhode Island in sixth (54), La Salle in seventh (52), and Duquesne in eighth (50).

The Rhode Island women's swimming team placed seventh in the 200-yard medley relay. Kari Leonard, Ginny Sorrell, Alexia Pool and Elaina Duggan swam in a combined time of 1:50.22.  In the women's 800 freestyle relay, Caroline Rousseau, Julie Kent, Jodi Tveitmoe and Elizabeth Bellamy finished in eighth place with a time of 7:50.44.

UMass captured the first gold medal of the meet with a first-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. Seniors Dylan Smith and Justin Zeimetz, and sophomores Evan Swisher and Mike Cordes won the event in a time of 1:32.15. Smith teamed with senior Owen Scollan and sophomores Greg Chartier and Derek Castellana to win the 800-yard medley relay with a time of 6:46.87.

On the women's side, George Washington finished the night in second place (102), St. Bonaventure in third (100), Massachusetts in fourth (83), followed by Fordham in fifth (75), Rhode Island in sixth (58), Xavier in seventh (50), Duquesne in eighth (46), and La Salle in ninth (43).

Richmond started the meet with a win in the 200-yard relay. Junior Brooke Boncher, sophomores Emily Bateman and Michelle Coombs, and freshman Anastasia Lau teamed to win the event in a time of 1:43.90.

The Spiders also captured first in the 800-yard freestyle relay. Senior Mary Adams, junior Anne Kirchner, sophomore Emily Bateman, and freshman Jessica Witt won the event in a time of 7:32.73.

Day two preliminaries begin at 10:30 a.m. with the finals starting at 6:30 p.m.
