Swimming Legend Ed Golden To Be Honored By URI

Oct. 31, 2007

KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island swimming and diving head coach Mick Westkott announced today that former Cranston High School swimming coach Ed Golden and his wife, Judy (URI '62) will be honored prior to the Rams' meet against Springfield College on Nov. 10, 2007. The ceremony will begin at 12:45 p.m. in the Tootel Aquatics Center, and a reception will be held in the URI Alumni Center following the meet.

The Ed Golden Humanitarian Fund will be renamed `The Judy and Ed Golden Swimming Team Humanitarian Fund' and used to support members of the men's and women's swimming and diving program. More than 300 guests have been invited, and the ceremony is open to the public.

"Ed Golden is one of the most well known and respected figures in swimming in Rhode Island," said Westkott. "He and his wife are true humanitarians who repeatedly went out of their way to help people inside and outside of their schools. I'm so honored to have them involved with our program and am looking forward to honoring them."

From 1959-65, Golden compiled a 132-13 meet record at Cranston, including 110 consecutive wins. He won seven consecutive Rhode Island titles and five New England Interscholastic titles while at Cranston East. He worked in both the Cranston and Narragansett school districts, while Judy served as a nurse for over 30 years in the West Warwick school system. She passed away in August, 2006.
