Gunderson Named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week

KINGSTON, R.I. – Rhode Island freshman Sarah Gunderson has been named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, the conference announced Monday afternoon.

Gunderson won both of her starts on the week, going 2-0 with a 1.91 earned run average in 11.0 innings of work over two starts. On Saturday, she pitched her first complete-game shutout, allowing just four hits in a 2-0 victory over St. Bonaventure. She struck out four batters and did not walk any. No runners got further than second base as Gunderson needed just 90 pitched to go the distance. The next day, Gunderson went four innings to earn her second win of the weekend. She retired the first nine batters she faced en route to the victory, which was her third in as many starts.

Since the start of April, Gunderson has turned a corner for the Rams, lowering her ERA by 2.48 runs per seven innings over her last 13 outings. Over that stretch, she has pitched five complete games, plus had a start that went 8.1 innings but did not count as a complete game. She also had walked just four batters in her last 64 innings of work. In her first 39.2 innings of the season, she walked 18 batters.

Gunderson is the third Ram to collect a weekly honor this season. Fellow freshman Erika Yeager was the Rookie of the Week for the week of Feb. 20, and junior Kylie Shivery was the Player of the Week for the week of April 3. This is only the second time in program history Rhode Island has had three different players earn weekly honors in the same season. The first time it happened was 23 years ago, when Renee Lukashefski and Anne Kelsen each won Player of the Week once and Sue Fogg was the Pitcher of the Week three times.

Alex Nickel of Saint Louis is the A-10 Player of the Week, while Maddie Baalman of Saint Louis and Ashley Venture of Saint Joseph's were the co-Pitcher of the Week winners.
