Softball Falls to Dayton 7-2 in Atlantic 10 Opener

DAYTON, Ohio - The Rhode Island softball team (5-12; 0-1 Atlantic 10) dropped a 7-2 decision to Dayton (3-17; 1-0 Atlantic 10) as it opened conference play Friday night.
For the second straight game, Rhody took an early lead as it scored one run in the first inning.
Junior Jackie Kampmeier (East Norriton, Pa.) got the inning started as she reached base on an error. Sophomore Amanda Sbei (Collegeville, Pa.) followed by drilling a single to left field. During the play, Sbei advanced to second on an error and Kampmeier scored from first.
The Flyers responded with one run in the second and two in the third to take a 3-1 lead. Dayton then added a pair of runs in the fourth and sixth innings to push its lead to 7-1.
The Rams scored one run in the seventh as senior Stefani Poedubicky (Wrightstown, N.J.) scored from third, but URI would not score again as the Flyers went on to win.
Freshman Alison Hartzell (Easton, Pa.) suffered the loss after coming on in relief for senior starter Odalys Torres (Carteret, N.J.). Hartzell finished the game by striking out three and going 4.0 innings.
Offensively, senior Alyse Fram (Pawtucket, R.I.) led the way as she collected pair of hits and stole a base.
Rhody returns to action tomorrow at noon against Dayton.
