Rams Lose Two Games at Saint Louis

April 27, 2008

Box Score

SAINT LOUIS, Mo. - URI lost a pair of games to Saint Louis University in Atlantic 10 softball action Sunday afternoon at the Billiken Sports Center. The Rams (14-36, 4-14 A-10) lost game one 6-2 and game two 5-2.

The Rams got on the board in the first inning in game one when sophomore Darci Borden (Elma, Wash.) led off with a triple and scored on a single by senior Shelly Peterson (Manhattan Beach, Calif.). The Billikens (19-31, 9-9 A-10) rallied back with four runs in the second - two coming in on a single by Caitlin Trevillyan - to grab a 4-1 lead.

URI junior Stefani Poedubicky (Wrightstown, N.J.) reached base on a one-out single to third in the sixth and scored on a double by sophomore Leah DiBussolo (East Norriton, Pa.) to cut the deficit to 4-2, but the Billikens answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to grab a 6-2 lead. Nicki Jost led off the inning with a home run and Brittney Schmidt drove in the second run later in the frame.

Senior Jill Anderson (Cohoes, N.Y.) suffered the loss for URI, allowing five hits and six runs (five earned) over six innings, walking four and striking out one. Stacy Gillette earned her fifth win of the season for Saint Louis, allowing eight hits and two runs while striking out six in seven innings.

Rhode Island jumped out a 1-0 lead in game two on a sac fly by DiBussolo in the first, and the Billikens tied the game in their half of the inning on an RBI single by Rachel Heet. They went ahead 2-1 in the third when Heet scored on a two-out error, but sophomore Melissa Wilson (Longview, Wash.) recorded a sac fly for URI in the third to tie the game at 2-2.

Saint Louis went ahead for good, 5-2, with three runs in the fifth. After Kristin Nicoletti's single gave SLU a 3-2 lead, Jost single up the middle plated two more Billikens and make it 5-2.

Freshman Stacey Stanovich (Northbridge, Mass.) took the loss for the Rams, allowing five hits and five runs (four earned) while striking out three in six innings. Lorena Floccari picked up the win for the Billikens, allowing five hits and two runs while striking out four in seven innings.

The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Hartford for a pair of games against the Hartford Hawks. Game one is slated to begin at 2:30 p.m.
