KINGSTON, R.I. - Junior Stefani Poedubicky (Wrightstown, N.J.) drove in three runs as the University of Rhode Island split its doubleheader with Saint Joseph's University in Atlantic 10 softball action Sunday afternoon. The Rams (13-25, 3-9 A-10) rallied back from a 9-4 loss in game one to win game two, 2-1.

Rhode Island broke a scoreless tie in game two with a pair of runs in the fourth inning to grab a 2-0 lead. Poedubicky plated the Rams' first run with a single to center that scored sophomore Jackie Kampmeier (East Norriton, Pa.). She later scored on a single by senior Christine Gentile (West Babylon, N.Y.).

SJU (8-17, 4-6 A-10) got a run back in the sixth on an RBI double by Brooke Darreff, but that couldn't get any closer as freshman Stacey Stanovich (Northbridge, Mass.) earned her fifth win of the season. She allowed seven hits and one run while striking out three. Lauren Cognigni took the loss for the Hawks as she allowed six hits and two runs while striking out seven.

The Hawks jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning of game one, but RBI singles by sophomore MaryBeth Ball (Clinton, Mass.) and senior Danielle Quimby (Lake Forest, Calif.) in the second brought the Rams to within one at 3-2. Two innings later, the Rams tacked on two more runs to grab a 4-3 lead when a double by Poedubicky scored senior Shelly Petersen (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and junior Alyse Fram (Pawtucket, R.I.).

Saint Joseph's went ahead for good in the sixth as it scored six time to take a 9-4 lead. The big blow came off the bat of Erika Rosenwinkel, who laced a triple with the bases loaded that gave SJU a 6-4 lead. Darreff, Dani Gonzalez, and Sarah Falk also drove in runs in the inning.

Gonzalez picked up the win for the Hawks as she worked seven innings, allowing eight hits and four runs (three earned) while striking out six. Senior Jill Anderson (Cohoes, N.Y.) allowed nine hits and nine runs (six earned) over seven innings for URI.

The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Amherst, Mass. for a pair of games against Massachusetts. Game one is slated to begin at 3 p.m.
