Rhode Island Drops Home Doubleheader to Fordham

KINGSTON, R.I. -- The University of Rhode Island softball team dropped both ends of an afternoon doubleheader to Fordham. The score of each game was 7-1.

In game one, Fordham scored one run in the first inning and added another in the third before a five-run fifth broke the game open. Fordham's Melissa Andrews knocked in two runs with a base hit before Mary Beth Puccio connected on a three-run homer to dead center field.

Rhody tallied its lone run in the bottom of the sixth. Stefani Poedubicky singled and stole second, setting herself up to score on Shelly Petersen's single.

Katie Halcomb threw 7.0 innings for Rhode Island, yielding 13 hits and seven runs (five earned) while walking two and striking out four. Poedubicki, Petersen, and Tara Hiteman, each tallied a hit for the home team.

In the second game, Fordham scored in the first frame on a Melissa Andrews single. They added two more in the third and another in the fourth before URI tallied a run on the scoreboard. Tara Hiteman hit a one-out single to right field and promptly stole second base. Danielle Quimby registered the RBI single.

But again, Fordham would pull away from Rhode Island by way of the long ball. In the top of the seventh, Allison Storc cleared the left field fence for a three-run shot.

For Rhody, Jackie Kampmeier threw 7.0 innings, scattering 12 hits while striking out four. Shelly Petersen, Alyssa Martino, Tara Hiteman, Lean DiBussolo, Danielle Quimby, Jill Anderson, and Stefani Poedubicky each tallied hits for URI in the nightcap.

The doubleheader also marked the final home games for the 2007 season and the team's three seniors - Katie Halcomb, Alyssa Martino, and Jamie Plamondon were honored in between the two contests.
