ATLANTIC 10 HONORS SIX WOMEN'S SOCCER STANDOUTS
Nov. 2, 2005 Senior forward Melanie Kasparek was named the Atlantic 10 Conference's Offensive Player of the Year in a vote of the league's coaches. She was also honored the Student-Athlete of the Year in a vote of the conference's sports information directors. Kasparek earned Offensive Player of the Year recognition for the second time in three seasons after leading the league in goals (13) and points (31) this season. The native of Trumbull, Conn. also tallied three game-winning goals in 2005. Kasparek was named Student-Athlete of the year after posting a 3.97 grade point average in psychology. She has garnered Atlantic 10 All-Academic Team honors three times. A 2004 NSCAA/adidas College Scholar All-America honoree, she was a second-team ESPN Academic All-America selection. Joining her on the league's Academic All-Conference Team is her sister, Megan Kasparek. Megan also earned a spot on the first-team all-conference squad. Midfielder Thorunn Jonsdottir and keeper Ria Carroll earned second-team All-Atlantic 10 recognition. Dora Larusdottir was named to the league's All-Rookie team. In addition, Zac Shaw, in his first season as head coach at Rhode Island, was named Coach of the Year. Shaw led the Rams to a 10-5-2 overall record (6-1-1 in Atlantic 10 play). Rhode Island is the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament which begins in Dayton on Thursday. An Ithaca graduate, Shaw is in his first season as a head coach.
