KINGSTON, R.I. -- Nine home matches and a tough non-conference road schedule highlight the University of Rhode Island's 2009 women's soccer schedule, which was released today by head coach Zac Shaw.

The Rams, coming off a 7-12-1 overall mark, will face four teams which played among the field of 64 in the 2008 NCAA Tournament.'

"We are looking forward to the challenge of again playing one of the most difficult out of non-conference schedules we can, while renewing our local rivalry with Brown and taking on our traditional regional foes," Shaw said. "The A-10 continues to improve each year and the success of Charlotte in the NCAA Tournament shows what a strong and deep conference we have. We are looking forward to translating last year's good play into results and are again looking to challenge for the league title and post-season play."

Rhody opens the 2009 regular season on Aug. 27 at Boston University. Three days later, the Rams will open their home slate hosting New Hampshire on Aug. 30. Following a trip to take on a pair of Big 12 teams - Missouri (Sept. 4) and Kansas (Sept. 6) - URI will take on Towson on Sept. 13 in Kingston.

On Sept. 17, Rhode Island will travel to face Vermont before returning home for a matchup with Quinnipiac on Sept. 20. The final non-conference match of the season comes on Oct. 14, when Rhody hosts Brown at the URI Soccer Complex.

URI opens up Atlantic 10 conference play on Sept. 25 at home against St. Bonaventure before beginning a stretch of three straight road A-10 contests at Temple (Sept. 27), Charlotte (Oct. 2) and Saint Louis (Oct. 4).

The Rams follow that swing up with three consecutive home contests, beginning with an A-10 weekend of action against Fordham (Oct. 9) and La Salle (Oct. 11). Rhode Island closes that homestand against Brown (Oct. 14).

After trips to Massachusetts (Oct. 17), Dayton (Oct. 23) and Xavier (Oct. 25), URI closes out the regular season at home, hosting Richmond (Oct. 30) and George Washington (Nov. 1). Those two games are also URI soccer doubleheaders, as the men's team face St. Bonaventure and Duquesne, respectively.

At the completion of the regular season, the top six teams in the league standings will advance to 2009 Atlantic 10 Championship - held at Charlotte from Nov. 5-8.

"I am excited about the incoming class we have and the quality that they will add to a very young and exciting returning group that only graduated two seniors," Shaw added. "Our goal this fall is to re-assert ourselves as one of the top programs in the A-10 and in New England. I feel our strong out of conference schedule will help prepare our program for success this year and into the future."
