KINGSTON, R.I. -- Rhode Island dropped a hard-fought 1-0 to Boston University in the Rams' 2008 home opener.

Both teams - ranked in the top 10 of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Northeast regional poll - played to a scoreless first half.

The Rams' Courtney David had two shots on goal, while BU put three shots on goal - all saved by Rhody goalkeeper Jackie Fede. "I was pleased with Jackie Fede, who was again outstanding, and was encouraged by the play of our younger players," head coach Zac Shaw said. "I thought Erese Fair improved from her first game, while Stephanie Santos played for the first time this year and did a good job."

Early in the second half, BU had several scoring chances that were thwarted by Fede. She made two of her five saves, while making a great play off a shot that hit the post.

Late in the 68th minute, the Terriers' Lina Cords converted a corner kick from the right side, into the box, where Jennifer Herman put a header past Fede for the lone score of the contest.

Agnes Arnadottir and Adrienne Ruhe Lischke each had good scoring attempts in the 81st and 82nd minutes.

"I think that we showed a good fighting spirit late in the game and were much better in the second half," Shaw explained. "Unfortunately, I think our best spell of the game came after they scored. We need to bring that focus and sense of urgency to the game earlier."

"Boston University is going to be one of the top programs in the region this year, but that is where we expect to be as well," Shaw added. "It was another good test for us against a good team, but competing is one thing, learning to win games is another. We need to be able to translate good play into goals, and goals into wins."

For the game, the Rams and Terriers each took 11 shots. BU attempted six corner kicks to Rhody's one. The teams combined for 29 fouls.

Next up for Rhode Island is an Aug. 31 matchup at Maine. Gametime is set for 1 p.m.
