Rhody Rapid Reaction
Women's Soccer: Rhode Island 1, Manhattan 0 - FINAL
How it Happened:
Stephanie Santos scored her second goal of the season and it proved to be the gamewinner. The senior from Warwick, R.I. took a pass from freshman Marisa Ammaturo in the 39th minute. Santos converted the pass on a nifty left-to-right shot from about 15 yards out.
What It Means:
Rhode Island captures its first victory of the season - which also marks the first victory for Michael Needham as head coach of the Rams. The 1996 graduate of URI took over at his alma mater this past January.
Inside the Box Score and Beyond:
- The Rams outshot the Jaspers 24-6 in the match, including an 8-0 advantage in shots on-goal. Rhode Island registered the first 13 shots of the match before Manhattan's Shannon Garrity got off a shot in the 38th minute, blocked by a Rhody defender.
- Marisa Ammaturo, in her first action in a Rhode Island uniform, played 53 minutes and managed three shots and an assist.
Rhode Island's Sunday matchup against Albany was cancelled due to Hurricane Irene, but it will return to action on Thursday, Sept. 1 at Stony Brook in a 7 p.m. matchup.
