BURLINGTON, Vt. -- The Rhode Island women's soccer team becomes the first URI team to compete in the regular season, as it travels north to take on Vermont this afternoon in a non-conference matchup.
The game also marks the first game on the Rhody sidelines for head coach Michael Needham. A 1996 Rhody graduate and letterwinner on the men's soccer team, Needham arrived in Kingston after spending the previous two seasons at the helm of the New Mexico State women's soccer program.
The Rams are coming off a 3-13-2 overall record and a 3-5-1 mark in Atlantic 10 play from a season ago. URI returns 16 players - including six starters - while adding 14 newcomers.
Seniors Adrienne Ruhe Lischke (two goals, four assists) and Stephanie Santos (three goals, one assist) are the team's top two returning scorers, while fellow three others - Alexis Veith, Courtney David, and Nikkita Persaud - all saw significant playing time for the Rams a season ago.
Rhode Island and Vermont have faced off on the pitch on 11 previous occasions, with the Rams holding a 7-3-1 advantage in the all-time series. In the last meeting in Burlington, Rhody earned a 2-1 victory on Sept. 17, 2009.
The game can be watched live via Vermont's webstream. There is no charge for viewing the stream.
