KINGSTON, R.I. -- Stephanie Santos' first half goal proved to be the gamewinner, as Rhode Island captured its first Atlantic 10 victory in a 1-0 win over Xavier. The win snapped a five-game losing streak in A-10 play.

The freshman from Warwick, R.I. scored her third goal of the season in the 21st minute, as teammates Colleen Dowd and Adrienne Ruhe Lischke set up the play into the box. Santos took the pass from Dowd and powered it past Musketeers' goalkeeper Kelly Farrell.

URI dominated the first half offensively, taking a 1-0 edge into the halftime break. The Rams outshot Xavier by a 13-1 count - including a 10-0 advantage in shots-on-goal.

In the second half, Xavier had two potential scoring opportunities late. But Rhody goalkeeper Agnes Arnadottir was able to convert both saves and preserve her first victory in net for the Rams. She finished the shutout with two saves.

XU goalkeeper Kelly Farrell allowed one goal, while making nine stops. Rhode Island took nine corner kicks to Xavier's one, and was whistled for 15 fouls to 12 for the Musketeers.

Rhode Island returns to action on Thursday, Oct. 16 at home when it hosts Massachusetts. That game will be broadcast by Cox Sports Television - time to be announced shortly.

Fans can also follow the action live via Rhody All-Access' videostream, or via Gametracker.
