Spitler Leads Scoring Charge in 5-0 Win over Indiana State

Sept. 14, 2008

Box Score

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Kassandra Spitler tallied two goals, as the Rams registered their first shutout of the season in a 5-0 victory over Indiana State.

The game was played in windy, rainy conditions - and there was a 30 minute delay in the second half, due to weather.

"I think we played well this afternoon, battling both the weather and a talented Indiana State team," head coach Zac Shaw said. "I was concerned how our young team would come out of the weather delay, but we were able to adjust well." Despite the inclement weather, URI's offense was able to shine. The Rams got on the scoreboard first - and early - as Agnes Arnadottir registered her first collegiate goal just 3:13 into the match. The newcomer from Reykjavik, Iceland found the back of the net off a free kick from 18 yards out.

Adrienne Ruhe Lischke added another tally in the 24th minute (23:58), footing an Alexis Veith entry to the right post, past ISU goalkeeper Emily Lahay. Rhode Island took a 2-0 edge into the break.

In the second half, Rhode Island tallied three more scores. Spitler scored her first goal of the game in the 53rd minute (52:30), as Ruhe Lischke placed a pass on the left side, from about 10 yards out. Spitler scored again in the 75th minute, curling a strong corner kick into the net for a score. Ina Bjorklid added a late goal in the 90th minute, as Stephanie Santos set her up with a pass from the end line.

"We made the most of our opportunities, on both ends of the field," Shaw explained. URI outshot Indiana State, 21-7 for the match - including a 12-3 advantage in shots-on-goal. Jackie Fede played all 90:00 in goal for Rhode Island, making two stops. Rhody attempted one corner kick and was whistled for 19 fouls.

Ruhe Lischke, Santos and Amanda Thomas were all named to the all-tournament team for their outstanding play over the two weekend games.

The Rams return to action on Wednesday, hosting Vermont at 7:30 p.m. at the URI Soccer Complex.
