KINGSTON, R.I. - The Collegiate Rowing Coaching Association (CRCA) selected sophomore Jenessa Redfern to the 2009 All-New England Region First Team this past weekend. The CRCA also honored six Rhode Island student-athletes for their work in the classroom on Tuesday as it announced its list of national scholar-athletes.

In 2009, Redfern (Wilmington, Mass.) helped Rhody earn a spot in the Eastern Sprints and finish second at the Atlantic 10 Championships. In addition to her All-New England honor, Redfern was selected as a CRCA National Scholar Athlete.

"Jenessa has worked extremely hard this year and deserves to be recognized among the best rowers in the New England Region," said URI head coach Shelagh Donohoe. "I am very proud of her and I look forward to working with her for the next two years."

Mallory Fossa (Mystic, Conn.), Karin Fulkerson (Amelia, Ohio), Lauren Killea (Coventry, R.I.), Nicole Klaiber (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and Grace Rignanese (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) were also selected as CRCA National Scholar-Athletes.

"Academic excellence is a priority for our team," Donohoe said. "I am pleased that six of our student-athletes have been recognized as national scholar athletes. Each one of these student-athletes has devoted countless hours toward their studies, while performing at a high level at the boathouse. They are exceptional young women and I am happy to be able to work with them."
