Women's Rowing Announces Incoming Recruiting Class

KINGSTON, R.I. - University of Rhode Island women's rowing coach Shelagh Donohoe announced today that 11 high school standouts have committed to row for the Rams in 2009-10. "We are proud that these young women will be joining our team this fall," Donohoe said. "Each one of these recruits will help us achieve our goals of academic and athletic excellence." The signees hail from Rhode Island (2), New York (1), Pennsylvania (1), Connecticut (2), New Hampshire (1), New Jersey (2), Michigan (1) and Virginia (1). Below is a complete list of the recruits: Anne Edwards - Linwood, N.J. - Edwards has been a four-year rower for Mainland Regional High School where she sat in the five seat of the Varsity 8+. Over the course of her career, she has won many medals at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta, New Jersey Scholastic Rowing Championship, Philadelphia Cities Championship and SRAA Nationals. In the classroom, Edwards received honor and merit roll all four years, she is a member of Mainland's National Honor Society, and will be graduating in the top 20 percent of her class this June. Edwards is a centennial scholarship recipient. Donohoe on Edwards - "Anne is a bright and enthusiastic young woman. I especially appreciate her positive nature and competitive spirit. She has unlimited potential and I am certain she will help us reach our goals" Rachel Heintz - Tariffville, Conn. - Heintz comes to URI after rowing for four years at Simsbury High School. Heintz is planning to study marine biology at URI. Donohoe on Heintz - "Rachel is a powerful rower with a ton of potential. I look forward to working with her." Kristen Hudak - Absecon, N.J. - Hudak is a four-year coxswain for Holy Spirit High School. In 2008 and 2009 Hudak was the coxswain for the Girls Varsity Lightweight 8. In 2008 she won counties, Stotesbury, and SRAA Nationals and placed second (Silver) at both states and cities. She is completing a very successful 2009. Her lightweight 8 has been invited to US Rowing Youth Nationals in Cincinnati, Ohio. She is a member of the National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society and has achieved high honor roll for the past four years. Hudak is in the top 15 percent of her class. Donohoe on Hudak - "Kristen is the type of coxswain we are looking for. She is smart, positive and has a great racing background. The coxswain position is very important to us. I know Kristen will bring leadership to that role." Hannah Johnson - Riverside, Conn. - Johnson is a four-year rower/sculler from Greenwich High School (spring) and Greenwich Crew (fall). She also trained with Maritime Rowing during the past 2 winters. She was named co-captain her Junior and senior years, and was named the Most Valuable Rower for the spring seasons in 2006 and 2007. In addition to rowing Hannah is a member of Honor Choir (Madrigals), YNET, a domestic abuse support group, and Safe Rides, a Red Cross affiliate. Johnson's older brother, Andrew is a rower at Connecticut College and has been invited (twice) to the US Rowing Selection Camp for the USAdaptive National Team - LTA 4+. Donohoe on Johnson - "Hannah is a well rounded student athlete and she has unlimited potential. She has the exact mentality and drive we are looking for. I am excited to be able to work with her over the next four years." Anne Mulholland - Drexel Hill, Pa. - Anne is an extremely skilled sculler from Upper Darby High School and Bachelor's Barge Club. Mulholland accumulated several medals during her high school career, including the 2008 and 2009 Philadelphia City Championship in the Women's Varsity Single. She also finished sixth in the A Final at the 2008 US Rowing Youth Nationals in Cincinnati, Ohio. Most recently, she qualified for the US Rowing Youth Nationals in Cincinnati in 2009. She finished seventh in single of the US Rowing Junior Speed Order in November of 2008. In addition, to her achievement on the water, Mulholland is graduating in the top five percent of her class, is a member of the National Honor Society and is a member of Executive Committee for Upper Darby High School. Mulholland is also a centennial scholarship recipient and is planning to study engineering at URI. Donohoe on Mulholland - "Anne has tremendous race experience; she is one of the best junior scullers in the country. She has a strong work ethic and positive attitude. She is definitely going to lead by example. I am thrilled that she will be a part of our program. I believe Anne will make an immediate impact on the varsity program." Alice Murray - Rumford, R.I. - Murray is a four-year rower/sculler from Bay View Academy and Narragansett Boat Club. Over the past four years, Murray has been a leader in Bay View's steady improvement. This season Bay View won many dual races and finished third in the petite finals at NEIRA's. Donohoe on Murray - "Alice is a truly talented and strong rower. She is Rhode Island's finest and I am thrilled that she decided to attend URI. She works hard and will fit in well on our team. I believe Alice will make an immediate impact on the varsity program." Harlee Nordstrom - Cranston, R.I. - Nordstrom is a four-year rower/sculler from Bay View Academy and Narragansett Boat Club. She is a member of the varsity eight. Donohoe on Nordstrom - "Harlee is a fantastic rower from Rhode Island. She has worked extremely hard to improve herself as well as her team. I am thrilled to work with her and I believe she will develop into an outstanding collegiate rower." Samantha Sills - Sterling Heights, Mich. - Sills is a five-year rower/sculler from Detroit Boat Club. She has competed in the 4X, 2X and 4+. Donohoe on Sills - "I had the opportunity to coach Sam at a summer camp. She is a technically sound rower and has the ability to be an outstanding college rower. I look forward to seeing her reach her potential." Heather Solomon - Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - Solomon is a strong lightweight rower from the Arlington Rowing Association where she was named Outstanding Rower of the Year on two occasions. Solomon intends to study Biology at URI. Donohoe on Solomon - "Heather is a solid lightweight rower. She will bring needed depth to that area of our team. I am looking forward to working with her." Ariana Wakeman - Exeter, N.H. - Wakeman is an outstanding rower from Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire. Ari is the stroke of the Varsity 8 that just recently won NEIRA's and was invited to US Rowing Youth Nationals in Cincinnati, Ohio. In the classroom, Wakeman has maintained high honors and honors and in 2008 won the Frank Weil prize for Exemplary Growth and Promise. Wakeman intends to be a Pre-Med major at URI. Donohoe on Wakeman - "Ari is a truly talented student and athlete. She rows for one of the most competitive high school programs in the country and I look forward to her bringing that experience and intensity to URI. I believe Ari will make an immediate impact on the varsity program." Sara Woodruff - Alexandria, Va. - Woodruff comes to URI after rowing both for Bishop Ireton High School in Alexandria, Va. and Thompson's Boat Club (TBC Racing) in Washington, D.C. Woodruff is the Co-captain of the 65 member Ireton team. Her most notable accomplishments include stroking the Varsity 8+ to First Place in the Baltimore City Championships and stroking the Varsity 4+to a second place victory at the 2009 Washington DC Metro Region Championships, and qualifying for the 2009 High School Nationals in late May. She also placed 8th in the 2009 Mid-Atlantic Erg Sprints in 2009. Woodruff is planning to study English and Secondary Education at URI. Donohoe on Woodruff - "Sara is a hard working rower with unlimited potential. She has a positive attitude and a competitive spirit. She is going to bring a strong work ethic to our program. I look forward to working with her."
