Rowing Announces 2008 Recruiting Class

KINGSTON, R.I. - University of Rhode Island women's rowing coach Shelagh Donohoe announced today that 10 high school standouts have committed to row for the Rams in 2008-09. "We're proud that these young women will be joining our family this fall," said Donohoe. "Our team worked extremely hard to bring home the Atlantic 10 Championship this spring, and this group of newcomers will play a key role in helping us continue our success." The signees hail from New York (2), Pennsylvania (2), California (1), Connecticut (1), Massachusetts (1), New Hampshire (1), New Jersey (1), and Virginia (1). Below is a complete list of the recruits. Emily Ali - Burke, Va. Ali rowed for James Robinson High School Crew. Her most notable accomplishments include a first-place finish in the 2007 Virginia State Championship and a seventh-place finish at the National High School Rowing Championships. Ali also participated in the 2007 Junior Development Camp and placed first in the 2007 Mid-Atlantic Erg Sprints. Donohoe on Ali: "Emily will be an outstanding addition to our program. She brings an unparalleled intensity and focus to her training. She is competitive and is the type of student-athlete that will help our program get to the next level. I look forward to working with her." Kelly Cesare - Evans City, Pa. Cesare comes to URI from the Steel City Rowing Club. She is a skilled sculler as well as sweep rower. Kelly's most notable accomplishments include a fourth-place finish in the 2X for the 2007 Junior World Championship trials, a second-place finish in the 4X at the 2007 Midwest Regional, and a third-place finish in the pair at the 2007 Midwest Regional. Kelly is planning to study engineering. Donohoe on Cesare: "Kelly is another rower that brings great versatility to the program. She has extensive sculling experience and has made an easy transition to sweep rowing. Kelly is bright and dedicated and will be an outstanding addition to our team."
Allison Friedlander - West Windsor, N.J. Friedlander rowed for the Mercer Junior Rowing Club. Her most notable accomplishments include a fourth-place finish in the Youth 8+ at the 2007 Head of the Charles and a fifth-place finish in the Varsity 8+ at the 2007 Northeast Regional. Donohoe on Friedlander: "Allison is a dedicated and hard working athlete. She is an outstanding team player and will fit in well in our program. The Mercer Junior program has provided her with an excellent rowing foundation. We are thrilled that she has decided to attend URI next year." Zoe Gentes - San Diego, Calif. Gentes comes to URI after rowing for the San Diego Rowing Club. Her most notable accomplishments include a fourth-place finish in the single at the 2007 South West Regional Championship and a seventh-place finish in the Varsity 8+ at the South West Regional Championship. Zoe is planning to study oceanography. Donohoe on Gentes: "Zoe is a skilled sculler and sweep rower. She will help bring depth to our team. Zoe's grandfather attended URI, so we are excited that Zoe has decided to continue the Rhody Pride!" Becky Lederer - Philadelphia, Pa. Lederer comes to URI from Mount Saint Joseph's Academy. She is a lightweight rower and her most notable accomplishments include a first-place finish in the lightweight 8+ at the 2007 NJ State Championships, a second-place finish in the lightweight 8+ at the 2007 Philadelphia City Championship, and a fourth-place finish in the lightweight 8+ at the 2007 Stotesbury Regatta. Donohoe on Lederer: "Becky is a talented lightweight rower who rows for a program with a strong tradition of success. We are confident that she will raise the bar for our lightweight program. Becky is excited about rowing in college and that enthusiasm will continue to push our entire program forward." Katie Michalovic - Lebanon, N.H. Michalovic comes to URI after rowing/coxing for the Upper Valley Rowing Foundation. Donohoe on Michalovic: "Katie's rowing and coxing experience will contribute to the depth of our program. Her ability to fill roles as a coxswain as well as a lightweight rower is valuable to our team's success." Nicole Salamone - Westport, Conn. Salamone comes to URI after rowing for Saugatuck Rowing Club. Nicole is a skilled sculler as well as sweep rower. Nicole's most notable accomplishments include a third-place finish in the Youth 4+ at the 2007 Head of the Charles, a second-place finish in the 4+ at the 2007 Head of the Housatonic, and a ninth-place finish at the 2007 US Rowing Youth Nationals. Donohoe on Salamone: "Nicole brings great versatility to our program. She is a skilled sculler as well as sweep rower. She has received outstanding training and race experience at Saugatuck Rowing Club. We are thrilled that she has decided to attend URI." Catie Szymanoski - Schenectady, N.Y. Szymanoski comes to URI after rowing/coxing for the Schenectady Rowing Club. She is a four-year varsity rower and was awarded MVP in 2006. Her most notable accomplishments include a third-place finish in the 2007 NY Sectionals and a sixth-place finish in the 2007 NY State Championships in the varsity 4+. Donohoe on Szymanoski: "Catie is a dedicated and enthusiastic rower/coxswain. Her versatility will prove to be very valuable to our program. I look forward to working with her." Kelley Woodacre - Wellesey, Mass. Woodacre has been a member of CRI for the past three years. She brings a wealth of sweep and sculling experience to the program. Woodacre's most notable accomplishments include a first-place finish in the Youth 8+ at the 2007 Head of the Charles, a second-place finish at the 2007 CanAmMex Regatta in both the 8+ and 4+, and a second-place finish in the Varsity 8+ at the 2007 Canadian Henley Regatta. She is entering URI as a Landscape Architecture Major. Donohoe on Woodacre: "We are thrilled that Kelley has decided to attend URI next year. She is an extremely competitive and talented athlete. We value the experience she has gained from rowing in the CRI Varsity 8+ and the CanAmMex boat. Kelley will have an immediate impact on our program and I look forward to working with her for the next four years." Courtney Woodard - Hyde Park, N.Y. Woodard comes to URI after coxing for the Hudson River Rowing Association. She is an outstanding coxswain that has coxed both girls and boys. Her most notable accomplishments include a seventh-place finish in the senior 4+ at the 2007 Scholastic Nationals, a top-10 finish in the Jr. Men's 8+ at the 2007 US Rowing Club Nationals, and a 13th-place finish in the Jr. men's 4+ at the 2007 Canadian Henley Regatta. Donohoe on Woodard: "Courtney is a skilled coxswain that comes to our program with a wide range of coxing experience. We depend on our coxswains to be strong leaders for the program and are confident that Courtney will be able to fill that role." |
