CAMDEN, N.J. - The Rhode Island women's rowing varsity eight team placed third at the ECAC Metro Championships Saturday morning and qualified for the 2009 Eastern Sprints.

"Both of our varsity teams had great performances today," said URI head coach Shelagh Donohoe. "Building a championship program does not happen over night, but we are definitely headed in the right direction."

The Rhody varsity eight took third in the event after it clocked a time of 6:46.7 to edge out conference rivals Fordham (6:51.5) and Massachusetts (6:51.9) in the grand final race.

In the second varsity eight event, Rhody took third in the grand final race as it posted a time of 7:05.4.

Competition at the Eastern Sprints begins on May 17 and will take place in Camden, N.J.
