KINGSTON, R.I. -
Rhode Island's Varsity 8 will close out its fall racing season this weekend at the Head of the Hooch Regatta in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Senior Katie Shattuck, an Alabama native and two-year team captain, is one of the nine athletes that will represent the Rams at their debut on the Chattahoochee River.

For Shattuck, the opportunity to race at the Hooch brings her rowing career full-circle. A former captain of the Huntsville High School rowing team, Shattuck's first time racing was on the Chattahoochee River as a high school novice.

"This is a huge honor and it's super exciting," Shattuck said. "This is my last fall race as a Ram and it's on the course that I first raced on. I remember being surprised by how long that race was because I didn't know what to expect. We actually ended up winning!"

Shattuck, a four-year rower in Rhode Island's Varsity 8, will look to end this weekend's race with another strong finish. The Rams are coming off an appearance at the Princeton Chase, where they were able to take on some of the nation's fastest crews. Rhode Island finished the three mile course just eight seconds off of the top-10 pace. This weekend, the Rams are hungry for more.

"We want to go out hard and and finish harder," Shattuck said. "We know that the Hooch is a long race, so we have to be consistent and dig deep to really pour it on in the second half."

Many of the teams entered into the race's Championship 8+ event are new opponents for Rhody. Shattuck feels that this could be an advantage for the team, as the other crews may not know what to expect of the reigning Atlantic 10 champions. Since there is only one boat entered to represent Rhode Island, the pressure is definitely on.

"Everyone in the Varsity 8 has worked extremely hard to earn their seats," Shattuck said. "I want to surprise these other teams and show them that we are a program to look out for. We have the potential of doing something incredible."

The Rams will come down the course at about 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3 between Embry-Riddle Aeronatical University and Old Dominion University. A livestream of the event will be available HERE
