PHILADELPHIA
– Rhode Island's top two boats swept the field in their respective heats as the Rams won the Lela H. Kerr Cup Saturday.

Rhode Island's Varsity 8 boat of coxswain Lucy Moyes, Emily Winslow, Erika Pena, Kiana Anderson, Mekenzie Mattheson, Allie Reilly, Katie Shattuck, Katie Usher and Meghan Ellis won the title in convincing fashion, beating second-place Drexel by eight seconds in the finals. Drexel – which hosted the event – had won six of the previous eight Kerr Cups.

Rhode Island's time of 7:10.98 in the finals was nearly five seconds faster than the team's time in the heat round. Rhody finished in 7:15.31 to win the heat and secure its spot in the finals.

The Second Varsity 8 contingent of coxswain Karen Petrik, Courtney Harrington, Maddie Van Ummersen, Kelsey Williams, Lauren Smith, Madalyn Saporito, Sage Iacovazzi, Jennae Alexander and Brooke McMahon continued its dominant season. The Rams posted a time of 7:20.00 to beat second-place Drexel by 5.23 seconds. The time in the finals also was a whopping 16.67 second improvement from Rhode Island's time in Heat 1, where it also swept the competition.

"We had an outstanding team effort today," Rhode Island head coach Shelagh Donahoe said. "We were focused and were able to improve some things from the heats to the finals. We will enjoy this experience and get right back to work on Monday."

Rhody nearly won the Varsity 4B+ flight as well. Coxswain Brenna Kelly, Chandler Fisher, Hannah Faretra, Brooke Vergona and Caroline Eastus won their heat to qualify for the finals. The Rams placed second in the finals behind only Fordham.

Rhode Island will complete its regular season next weekend when it travels to Boston to compete against Boston College and Dartmouth on Saturday, April 21. The Varsity 8 race against BC will serve as the annual Resolute Cup.
