Varsity 8, 2V8 Boats Place Second at Cooper Sprints

CHERRY HILL, N.J. – Rhode Island's top two boats put forth a strong showing Sunday at the Cooper Sprints, as both the Varsity 8+ and Second Varity 8+ boats placed second in their flights.

Compeiting for the first time this spring, the Rams V8+ team of Emily Winslow, Katie Shattuck, Kiana Anderson, Mekenzie Mattheson, Allie Reilly, Meghan Ellis, Katie Usher, Erika Pena and coxswain Karen Petik won its heat in a time of 7:18.37 to advance to the grand final. Rhody easily held off North Carolina, Bucknell and West Virginia to claim its spot.

In the final, Rhode Island had a time of 7:31.85, placing second behind only Navy's time of 7:24.22. The Rams were 2.39 seconds ahead of third-place finisher Massachusetts.

The results were similar in the 2V8+ flight, where the Rams again won their qualifying heat, this time edging Boston College and North Carolina.  Coxswain Lucy Moyes, Courtney Harrington, Maddie Van Ummersen, Madalyn Saporito, Sarah Dudinski, Kelsey Williams, Sage Iacovazzi, Jennae Alexander and Lauren Smith posted a time of 7:55.62 in the grand final, coming in 2.48 seconds behind Navy.

"Early season races allow us to identify things we are doing well as well as things that need improving," Rhode Island head coach Shelagh Donohoe said. "I am pleased with our overall fitness level and as we get more water time, we will improve on some race specific things. I'm excited for us to continue to make progress."
