Gurney, Fraser, Qualify For NCAA Northeast Regional Gymnastics Championships

View Complete List Of NCAA Regionals and Qualifiers KINGSTON, R.I - Rhode Island senior Kelly Gurney and freshman Ananda Fraser have both qualified for the NCAA Northeast Regional Gymnatics Championships to be held at the University of Michigan on April 14th starting at 6:00 p.m. Gurney qualified as an all-arounder, while Fraser will be going to compete on vault. Gymnasts qualified for the meet based on their season averages in each event. Gurney finished second in the all-around competition at Saturday's ECAC Championships at Cornell to lead the Rams to third place out of nine teams. URI entered the meet ranked seventh in the field. Gurney was second on the uneven parallel bars with a score of 9.775, while tying for third on floor exercise (9.700) and finishing fifth on vault (9.725). Her all around total of 38.550 was the fourth-highest of her career. She posted a personal-best 38.900 on Senior Night against Bridgeport on March 10, and also had a 38.875 at North Carolina with George Washington, Towson and William & Mary on March 24. This will be Gurney's second-straight trip to the NCAA Regionals, and third overall. She also competed as a freshman at Auburn three years ago before transferring to URI. Fraser had a solid season in only her first year with the Rams. She had a career-high score of 9.800 on vault against Bridgeport, and also posted a 9.725 at Rutgers on Feb. 24. Six teams (Florida, Michigan, Arkansas, Pittsburgh, New Hampshire and Rutgers) will be competing at the Northeast Regional at Michigan, along with all the individual qualifiers. The top-two-teams move on to the NCAA Championships, while individuals that finish in the top-two of each event that are not on one of the two advancing teams, also move on to the national championships on April 26-28, hosted by the University of Utah.
