Ananda Fraser Named ECAC Co-Rookie Of The Week

March 8, 2007

KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island freshman Ananda Fraser was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women's Gymnastics Co-Rookie of the Week, Thursday, for her performance in the Rams' meet at Temple last Saturday. Sophomore teammate Lauren Wasilewski was also recognized as the Co-Coach's Choice award winner.

Despite battling a knee injury that limits her training time, Fraser won the vault event with a career-high 9.750 score. She also placed third on floor exercise with her second-best score of the season (9.55) while tying for fourth on uneven bars (9.450).

Wasilewski, unable to train more than once a week due to an ankle injury, has received her two highest scores on vault in the last two weeks. She was credited with a 9.450 at Temple, a week after hitting for a season-high 9.550 at Rutgers on Feb. 24.

Despite sweeping first place in all four individual events and the all-around during the meet, URI was edged by the host Owls, 188.600-187.625

It marked the second-straight week a URI gymnast was recognized with the Coach's Award. Senior Erica Heaney was the co-recipient of the honor on March 1 after returning from an ACL injury last year and tying for fourth place with a 9.675 in the vault competition in the Rams' quad-meet at Rutgers.

The Rams' will host Bridgeport this Saturday, March 10 at 7:00 p.m. in their final home meet of the season. URI will honor its five seniors - Jade Bundra, Kelly Gurney, Heaney, Emily Rinaldo and Kylie Tanner - in a brief ceremony following the meet.
