Rivera Picks Up Second Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week Award
Dec. 14, 2009
KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island freshman Ashley Rivera (Lowell, Mass.) has earned her second consecutive Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week award, after averaging 15.0 points per game in a 1-1 week for the Rams. The 5-4 guard shot 50.0% from beyond the arc and scored a game- and career-high 24 points while knocking down five 3-pointers against Brown. It marked the third time this season that she has netted five long-range jumpers in a single game. Rivera also recorded six rebounds, two assists and a steal on the week and was a perfect 3-of-3 from the foul line. The Rhody rookie has put up a double-digit performance in seven of the Rams' last eight contests and currently leads the team with 12.3 points per game. She also leads all A-10 freshman in scoring and is the only first-year player listed among the top-30 in the league in points per game. Rivera is URI's first player to earn A-10 Rookie of the Week honors in back-to-back weeks since Jaime Gray did so in 1995 (Dec. 3 and Dec. 10). Rhode Island returns to action - following the break for exams - when it hosts Towson on Tuesday, Dec. 22. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
