Rams Defeated at Northeastern, 84-57

Nov. 21, 2009

Box Score | Postgame with Coach Inglese

BOSTON - Freshman Ashley Rivera netted a team high 17 points as the Rhode Island women's basketball team dropped an 84-57 decision to Northeastern on Saturday afternoon at Matthews Arena. Rivera connected on five shots from long range in the loss.

Sophomore Lara Gaspar scored in double figures for the third straight game as she finished with 12 points and six rebounds on the afternoon. Senior Lindsay Harris and junior Megan Shoniker rounded out Rhody's double-digit scorers, tallying 11 points apiece. Harris also pulled down a team-best seven boards.

Northeastern (2-1) jumped out to a 16-point lead (20-4) over the first ten minutes of play but a three-pointer by Megan Shoniker capped a 10-3 Rhody run that cut the Huskies' lead to nine (23-14) with 8:04 remaining in the half. The two teams traded baskets the rest of the way with Northeastern taking a 40-29 advantage into the break.

Six minutes into the second half, the Rams cut their deficit to seven (51-44) on a jumper by Shoniker but a pair of buckets and two free throws put NU back in front by double-digits (57-44). The Rams were unable to get any closer than 11 the rest of the way.

Northeastern's Brittany Wilson led all scorers with 19 points while the Huskies' Jamie Conroy recorded a game-high nine rebounds.

As a team, Rhode Island shot a season-best 40.4 percent from the field (23-for-57), including an 8-for-18 (44.4%) showing from three-point territory.

The Rams (0-3) are back in action at 5 p.m. on Tuesday night when they host Seton Hall in the first end of a Rhody basketball doubleheader. Following the conclusion of the women's game, the URI men will take on Stony Brook at 7:30 p.m.
