NEWARK, N.J. - Senior Megan Shoniker led the Rams in scoring with 19 points as the Rhode Island women's basketball team defeated NJIT, 57-51, on Saturday afternoon at the Fleisher Center. Shoniker has now led URI in scoring in each of the team's three games so far this season.
Junior Lara Gaspar and sophomore Ashley Rivera also scored in double figures with 14 points apiece. Rivera's all came in the second half as she connected on four long-range jumpers. Gaspar, meanwhile, led Rhody in rebounding for the third straight game, narrowly missing a double-double with nine boards.
The Rams (2-1) and Highlanders (0-3) traded the lead nine times over the first eight minutes, with neither team trailing by more than two points. NJIT went up for good after a layup by Maria Sanchez made it 13-12 with 12:07 remaining in the frame. From there, NJIT used a 20-7 run over the next eight and a half minutes to take a 14-point lead 33-19) - its largest of the game - but Shoniker and Gaspar combined for eight unanswered points to close out the half, sending Rhody into the break down by six (33-27).
Shoniker (12) and Gaspar (10) both reached double figures over the first 20 minutes while, as a team, Rhode Island held an 18-9 rebounding advantage.
The Rams returned from the locker room and chipped away at the lead, finally pulling in front, 45-44, after 11 consecutive points - including three makes from behind the arc - by sophomore Ashley Rivera.
Rhode Island never trailed again, despite NJIT pulling to within three (54-51) with 1:21 to go in the game.
Overall, URI outrebounded the Highlanders (37-29) and shot 46.8-percent while holding NJIT to a 33.3-percent showing from the floor.
The Rams return to acon on Monday night when they travel to Fairfield for a 7 p.m. meeting with the Stags.
