KINGSTON, R.I. - Junior forward Yatar Kuyateh recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds but St. Joseph's topped the Rams, 55-34, in their Atlantic 10 Conference opener tonight in Keaney Gymnasium.

URI freshman guard Denise King scored 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting, and sophomore Lyrica Smith had six points and six rebounds for the Rams, who saw their home winning streak end at three.

Junior Susan Moran paced a balanced St. Joseph's attack with 15 points. Senior Angela Zampella dished out nine assists and gathered eight rebounds.

Freshman guard Lindsey O'Neil opened the scoring with a three-pointer :46 into the first half. Unfortunately for the Rams, that was their only lead of the game. The Hawks scored 11 of the next 13 points to take an 11-5 lead. Leading 21-13 with 6:59 left in the half, St. Joseph's closed out the half with a 19-2 surge to take a 40-15 lead at the intermission.

The Rams continued to battle in the second stanza. After a lay-up by St. Joseph's Irina Krasnoshiok with 18:01 to play, the Rams scored seven consecutive points over the next 2:29 to close the gap to 20 (42-22). King keyed the rally with five points and an assist. In the second half, URI held the Hawks to just 15 points - its best defensive effort of the season - and outscored St. Joseph's, 19-15. King scored all 10 of her points in the half.

The Rams (7-6, 0-1 Atlantic 10) begin a three-game road trip at Massachusetts on Tuesday, Jan. 9 at 7 p.m.
