Assistant, Rhode Island, 2005-present The 2008-09 academic year marks former Rhode Island women's basketball standout and 1,000-point scorer Denise King's fourth season as a member of head coach Tom Garrick's staff. King's responsibilities include: academics, team travel, equipment, film exchange, scouting, and recruiting. "We are extremely fortunate to have had Denise return to URI," Garrick said upon King's hiring. "She is a tireless worker and knows the system here. She has gained a lot of valuable experience working at camps and coaching at the high school level. I am very pleased that Denise has come home to URI." The Catonsville, Md. native starred at Rhode Island from 2000-04. She averaged 12.4 points per game as a senior and led the team in assists with 4.2 per contest. She finished her career with 1,023 points, 14th on the school's all-time scoring list, and was named an Atlantic 10 Third-Team All-Conference selection as a senior. A team captain during her junior and senior seasons, she also was an Atlantic 10 All-Tournament team honoree in 2003. Recipient of the University of Rhode Island's Althea Gibson Award in 2004, King reptesented the University at the 2003 NCAA Leadership Conference and was inducted into the Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society, the Golden Key International Honor Society and the Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Society. King has been active in the community as well, participating in the Rhody Reads program, serving as a member of URI's Student Athletic Advisory Committee and volunteering at the Special Olympics and the World Scholar Athlete Games. After graduation, Denise returned to Maryland to help coach at St. Paul's School for Girls, with former high school head coach Jim Stromberg. The Gators finished out the season as one of the top-5 teams in the Baltimore-Metro Area. She also helped coach an eighth grade soccer team and helped lead the Maryland Waves (11u) to the AAU Maryland State title as well as a top-25 finish in the nation. updated: 6/4/08
