LISBON, PORTUGAL - Rhode Island women's basketball grabbed a 55-50 victory against the Lisbon All-Stars in the first game of their foreign tour on Monday.
The All-Stars had a 23-19 lead in the first quarter before Rhode Island's Davida Dale converted a steal into a classic 3-point play that brought the Rams within one (23-22). Two good free throws by Jalissa Ross tied the score at 26-26. The All-Stars answered with a basket of their own to get back on top 28-26 but a 3-pointer by Erin Jones put the Rams on top 29-28 to go into the half.
Rhody then used a 12-4 run to gain momentum in the third quarter and didn't look back, holding the lead until the final whistle. All 14 Rams were able to see playing time in the win.
"Our first game was quite a challenge," said head coach Daynia La-Force. "The Lisbon All-Stars compiled a group of talented players who refused to lose but our tenacity and teamwork proved to be too much for them to overcome. We won the game because we allowed our team chemistry to make us victorious in the end."
The Rams return to the court tomorrow, August 14 to face the Belem All-Stars.
