Vargas, Portugal Advance to Quarterfinals of FIBA U-18 Women’s European Championship

KINGSTON, R.I. – Rhode Island incoming freshman Marta Vargas and her teammates with Team Portugal have advanced to the quarterfinals of the FIBA U-18 Women's European Championship.

After posting a 4-1 record in the Group Phase of the tournament, Portugal earned the second seed in coming out of Group A. The team's lone loss was a 53-46 defeat against Poland Wednesday.

Portugal will face Germany Friday in Dublin, Ireland. The winner of that game will play the winner of Romania-Great Britain in the semifinals. Germany earned the top seed in Group B, winning all five of its games.

Vargas has appeared in three games in the championship, averaging 9.5 minutes off the bench for Portugal, the No. 19 ranked team in the world. Following the U-18 Women's European Championship, Vargas will meet her Rhode Island teammates when the Rams travel to Lisbon, Portugal for the start of its upcoming international trip.
