SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Ashhad Agyapong placed sixth in the first of four trial heats in the 200m dash this afternoon at the 2007 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship. The national championship meet is being held at the Alex G. Spanos Track & Field Complex at Sacramento State.

Agyapong clocked 21.48 seconds in the 200m. The top three finishers from each heat, plus the next six fastest times, advanced to the semifinal round. He ended up 25th among all other runners in the preliminary round.

Just a day earlier - on June 6 - Agyapong placed eighth in his trial heat of the 100m. He clocked 10.51 for the 100m race. The top four runners from each heat, plus the next six fastest advanced to the semifinal round. Agyapong finished up 22nd in the preliminary round.

He made URI history, becoming the first Ram runner to qualify for two events in the national championship race.

The meet capped off a highly successful career for Agyapong in a Rhody singlet. A two-time co-captain of the men's track & field team during his career, he helped to lead the team to five Atlantic 10 team titles and four New England Intercollegiate crowns.

Individually, he was a 13-time Atlantic 10 champions in seven different events. Most recently, at the 2007 A-10 indoor track & field championship held on the URI campus at the Mackal Fieldhouse, he won the 200m and 400m dashes for the third consecutive year. On the New England level, he was captured five individual titles.

A three-time All-East selection, he has also provisionally qualified for the NCAA Track & Field national championships on three occasions. This past March, he competed at the 2007 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championship in the 200m, where he finished 13th overall.

The holder of every URI school record in the sprints - from the 55m dash indoors to the 400m indoors and outdoors - he has set or broken 16 Rhody records in his career. A native of Trenton, New Jersey, he is scheduled to graduate this summer with a degree in psychology.
