Rams Capture New England Championship

AMHERST, Mass. -- The Rhode Island men's track & field team captured the 2009 New England Championship. In third place after day one of competition, the Rams defended its N.E. title, with a total of 103 points. Massachusetts was second with 80 points, followed by Connecticut with 61. Derek Peterson won the discus title, with a season-best heave of 174-08 (53.24m). Tyler Adams added an eighth place finish in the event (148-05/45.25m). Adams placed fourth in the shot put, with a toss of 50-10.25 (15.50m). Jacob Keeling was seventh (48-10) (14.88m). Nicholas Guscott was second (10.68) and Sam Killen seventh (10.96) in the 100m dash. David Kennedy added a pair of second place finishes - in the 200m (21.53) and 400m (47.84) dashes. Michael Elliott placed third in the high jump, clearing the bar at 6-6.75. He tied two others, but earned the third place finish on account of the number of attempts. Nick Sanborn clocked 1:51.76 in the 800m run, good for fourth place overall. In the 110m hurdles, Alex Reid crossed the finish line in fourth place, in a time of 14.79 seconds.
