Day 1 Results from the New England Championship

DURHAM, N.H. -- The University of Rhode Island completed day one at the 2008 New England Championship, held at Atkins Track on the campus of the University of New Hampshire.

Michael Bernardo captured the hammer throw, with a toss of 185-09 (56.63m). Ryan McCarthy (198-01) and Mason Folcarelli (196-06) placed second and third, respectively in the javelin. James Whelan totalled 5540 points, good for eighth in the decathlon.

In the prelims, Michael Bland clocked 10.75 in his qualifying heat of the 100m and will advance to Saturday's final. Bland (21.95) and David Kennedy (22.20) also advanced tomorrow's 200m final. Kennedy (49.12), Cameron Cormier (49.16) and Kimly May (50.85) will take part in Saturday's 400m final. Alex Reid (14.59) and Yudehwheh Gbaa (14.64) each won their respective trial heats in the 110m hurdles, advancing to Saturday's finals. Brian Alexander (54.76) moves onto the 400m hurdles final.

The New England Championship continues on Saturday, May 10.
