KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island senior captain Ashhad Agyapong led the Rams to a first-place finish at the Rhody Mega Meet on Friday night, February 2. Agyapong posted IC4A-qualifying first-place finishes in both the 55m dash (6.44) and the 400m dash (48.74).
Rhody posted eight other first-place marks en route to the win. Senior LaeJon Brooks qualified for the IC4A's, capturing the 55m hurdles in 7.57 while sophomore Shawn Leonard placed first in the high jump (6-06.75). Junior Sean Strizzi claimed the pole vault with a conference-leading and IC4A-qualifying height of 16-02.75.
Freshman Andrew Westover won the long jump with a 22.05-75 leap and junior Yudehwheh Gbaa took the triple jump with an IC4A-qualifying distance of 49-01.00. In the 4x400-meter relay, URI placed first in 3:24.66.
In the shot put, junior Ryan McCarthy finished on top with a conference-leading 53-03.75 throw while classmate Michael Bernardo won the weight throw with a 57-09.50 toss. Both distances were IC4A-qualifying marks.
The Rams return to action next Friday, February 9, when they travel to New York, N.Y. for the Armory Winter Games, set to begin at 6:00 p.m.
