KINGSTON, R.I. – Rhode Island men's track and field assistant coach Rob Whitten has been named the 2018 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Northeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Associate announced.
Each of the nine regions honored both genders' top track athletes and field athletes, and the top men's and women's head coaches and assistant coaches. Award winners were determined by a vote of USTFCCCA member coaches.
Whitten, in his 10th year, led the jumps and combined events at Rhode Island to a sweep of all five event titles at the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championship. In total, the group scored 85.5 points towards the teams winning performance. Among the four that qualified to the East preliminary round, triple jumper Casey Burley set the A-10 meet record and swept both horizontal events at the conference championship.
Rhode Island won its 23rd Atlantic 10 Championship this year, winning by the biggest margin in the outdoor championship since 2010.
